Noonday Water Stop

Special thanks to Chris from Russiaville, IN, who sent along a note that this painting is called “Noonday Water Stop”. This is the painting mentioned in Ernie Pyle’s book “Brave Men”. He painted it in 1939 and 1940. It was Gil’s first published painting (1943, Trains Magazine) and he was deployed overseas at the time. This was the painting that launched Gil’s career as a railroad artist.
We encourage you to read “A Noon Stop for Water” By Robert Field at TheTracksidePhotographer.com -an excellent story with superb photography and features Gil Reid’s NoonDay Water Stop painting.
Update 10/19/24: This painting was mentioned by Chris Burger, Ried’s good friend, in his 10/18/24 presentation at the Milwaukee School of Engineering – Grohmann Museum’s exhibit: “Gil Reid and Friends: Working on the Railroad”. Note this exhibit is on display from Sept. 6 – Dec. 22, 2024!
