Grohmann Museum Exhibit Showcasing Gil Reid and Fellow Railroad Artists
The Kalmbach Art Collection: Pairing Words and Imagery
May 16–August 19, 2025 | Grohmann Museum, Milwaukee WI
We’re excited to share that Gil Reid’s work will be featured in The Kalmbach Art Collection: Pairing Words and Imagery, a special exhibit at the Grohmann Museum in Milwaukee. This is the first public showing of Kalmbach Media’s historic art collection—a treasure trove of rail-themed paintings and drawings that have inspired generations of railroad enthusiasts.
The collection includes works from some of the most celebrated railroad artists, including Gil Reid, Howard Fogg, George Gloff, Ted Rose, and John Swatsley. Many of these pieces have appeared in the pages of Trains magazine and classic books like The Hiawatha Story and The Nickel Plate Story, bringing the railroading world vividly to life through the perfect pairing of words and imagery.
The exhibit honors the unique partnership between Kalmbach’s writers and artists—how their collaboration gave readers unforgettable stories and iconic visuals that have stood the test of time.
Kevin Keefe, a board member of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art and former vice president-editorial at Kalmbach Media presented the opening reception on May 16. If you’re in the Milwaukee area this summer, this is a can’t-miss event to experience Gil’s work alongside some of the greatest railroad artists in history. The exhibit is on display there until August 19, 2025
