Another Rendition of Tweetsie 12, ET&WNC Railroad #12!

Sold!

Well, this has been a fascinating discovery!

A friend recognized and acquired this piece of work at an estate sale in Raleigh, NC. They described it as an “unusual painted piece… With the blending contrasting and the artistic ability with the colors I knew this was special”.

The subject is the now famous, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad ET&WNC #12, aka “Tweetsie 12”. The engine is a narrow-gauge 10-26-D class 4-6-0 “Ten-Wheeler” which is still operating at the Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock, NC

The piece is remarkably (!) similar to the subject and scene of the original to the Tweetsie Railroad Reid Originals shared previously, which I understand are on display at the Tweetsie administration offices in Blowing Rock. I communicated with the Robbins family from Tweetsie RR, shared observations and we can clearly see some differences in details, colors and tone of the two paintings.

We cannot affirm authenticity of any of these works, but based on other stories and draft materials we have had in possession from the Reid estate, we guess that Gil occasionally had produced complete paintings which were subsequently redone, based on either self-doubt or from conversations with the original commission. This may be the case here, but we don’t know. If anyone has other ideas, we invite you to please share
